PAUL BETHKE and JAKOB BERNDT, old school buddies from the St.Pauli district of Hamburg. Paul's background as a development aid worker in Asia led to him wanting to do something good. Jakob had seen enough of the media and advertising business and was looking for a change of direction - literally.
Paul earnt a living at a Smoothie start-up and teased Jakob with his idea of a "scene" softdrink with a social aspect. A year spent in their own sticky "production kitchen" at home, at nerdy brewery fairs events and unsuccesful discussions with potential Swiss investors, LEMONAID BEVERAGES was born.
According to Paul & Jakob "Organic is now almost an industry standard, it's shaken off the dust and is accepted by everyone.
Fairtrade just lies there, still down a little, at least in Germany. There are coffees and bananas and also some nice T-shirts... but not much more.
Fairtrade is ideal. Not only are you doing something good, but you're making a real contribution to the bigger picture."
LEMONAID helps support social and education projects at fairtrade plantations in Brazil and Paraguay.
CHARITEA's black tea and green teas come from Sri Lanka, where the fairtrade money supports education projects for kids and keeps a health centre in operation. Rooibos comes from South Africa, where a Kindergarten is being financed by the fairtrade premium.
Right now, they're distributing to Hamburg, Berlin, Cologne, Dusseldorf, Munich, Frankfurt, Bremen and Stuttgart.
You'll find it in the bars, clubs and restaurants as well as chic Supermarkets. Sweden, Denmark, Austria and Switzerland are the latest targets.
