Tucked away from the bustling UNESCO city of Salzburg and the famed but busy ski slopes of wider Salzburgerland, the striking snow-sure shores of Goldegg am See offer a peaceful winter holiday retreat that is – in our humble (read: fantastic) opinion - perfect for all the family.
Hop on a short hotel shuttle from lakeside design den, Der Seehof, and enter the world of the Ski amadé. Austria’s largest ski paradise, it is made up of five regions and 760 km of ski slopes, not to mention 270 cable car installations, as well as rustic, fire-crackling mountain huts, lit night-time ski and 60km cross-country tracks galore - hold on to your perfectly snug hats, you have just entered winter holiday heaven.
For those of you trailing little skis and mini bilingual munchkins upon them, however, some chilled ski-style holiday relaxation may be more on the cards, so just point your noses in sight of nearby Buchberg, whose effortlessly family-friendly snow vibes boast 10km of slopes, three tobbits and even a Babylift – because nobody puts baby in the corner.
The Salzburg province, however, is indeed home to some of the world’s finest winter athletes, from Marcel Hirscher to Anna Veith, so should your mini-me be running even you off your skis, larger resorts such as St. Johan, Gasteinertal, Dienten and Angertal are less than half an hour away, and you can always hop on the ski safari and scatter snow in them all.
Make your way home to your lovely lakeside spot of peace and calm, Der Seehof is a famed Austrian hub loved and nurtured by the same family down the generations, as famous for its food as it is its art and style. This is a peek at the Austrian good life, full of plump cushions, deep sofas, night time chats with a bottle of Schnapps and a little dash of the whimsical, the kids tucked up safe in bed and the snow falling softly outside.
