There’s always that wintertime lull after boxing day, isn’t there… but in Copenhagen, the fun doesn’t have to end after Christmas, oh no. The city’s epic family-friendly culture-den theme park, Tivoli Gardens, was celebrating its 175-year anniversary this February 2018, by opening a whole new season of sparkling day-out festivity for locals and visitors alike, aptly named: Winter.
Renowned as the second oldest theme park in the world (behind Bakken, another Danish theme park innovation – the Scandi’s have been leading the way since the 1800s, it seems), Tivoli Gardens is a winter wonderland of lights, rides, restaurants, nature and decorations, right slap bang in the middle of the city - perfect for a visit with mini munchkins, or sans kiddies altogether. Founded in 1843 as an elegant Victorian garden, Tivoli Gardens soon grew to become a family-fave themed wonderland palace that inspired the likes of Walt Disney and Hans Christian Andersen, both of who walked through its gates mere men, and walked out of them, creatives on a mission.
Fearlessly original and dedicated to creating a wondrous fairy-tale world within its stylish Scandi one, Copenhagen’s Tivoli Gardens has expanded its seasonal repertoire to include its latest thrill - a shining winter wonderland. Move over Christmas, it’s not all about you anymore. The incredible 500,000 sparkling bright lights (LED, by the way) of Tivoli’s winter gardens will entice you out of Copenhagen’s seasonal darkness and lead you into a wintery treat, complete with ice rink right outside the Moorish Palace.
Circumnavigate the lake and watch decorations dangle from the garden’s 800+ trees, as scents of mulled wine, sweets and roasted goodies waft through the festive Scandi air. This is Denmark’s sparkling Copenhagen culture den pulled right out of a fairy-tale book, a winter wonderland that shows you a different side to not only the city, but winter itself.
