"Home. What is it exactly?" Ilse Crawford of Studioilse is a London-based designer, academic and creative director whose designs and accompanying 'A Homely Home' philosophy of well-being have made her an international name.
She and her team create environments in which people feel comfortable and where everything just makes sense - this is her signature "Making you feel at Home" as evident in the hotel project Ett Hem in Stockholm.
This has seen her work with, and help pioneer design legacies for, brands associated with a simpler, better way of living and whose aesthetic is integral to their name.
She approaches designing a loving, comfortable, almost sensual environment with an all-encompassing attitude that sees her consider all the human senses: sight, hearing, taste, touch and smell.
The aim is to promote a sense of balance and harmony and create rooms that help enhance human feeling.
She is also working to instil this mission in the next generation of designers. As founder of the department of Man and Wellbeing at the Design Academy Eindhoven, she nurtures and encourages students to question why and how their work can improve the reality of life.
'Design should inspire and comfort, it should welcome you in and make you feel at home"; this is her philosophy and this is something that Ilse Crawford and her team do unequivocally.
Should you wish to experience the presence of some of Ilse’s designs for yourself, she has done a small capsule collection with IKEA that sees thirty signature pieces take to the shelves, all with the aim of inspiring an inner sense of well-being. Alternatively, snap a deisnger piece from the recent collaboration with Georg Jensen - a collection of steel, brass and copper water jugs, candle holders and vases.
This is achieved through their subtle, beautiful designs and through the tactile materials used - cork, ceramic, seagrass and bamboo - all of which are less common materials that have a particular touch. Through the handling of them, you appreciate their origins and the unfamiliar touch roots you very much in the present.
Ilse Crawford is also the designer at one of our member hotels in Stockholm, the award winning Ett Hem. A carefully and beautifully curated hotel, it was a former Arts and Crafts building converted into a 12-bedroom luxury hotel.
More personal than boutique, it is the perfect home away from home – here you are free to do what you like, whenever you like, and there is no divide between back stairs and front of house. Thanks to Ilse, this is a space where everything is completely open and completely beautiful.
