You would think that a city, which consistently ranks high on lists measuring urban quality of life, would have an unusual amount of culinary delights on offer. Geneva certainly doesn’t disappoint. Its location, between the Rhône river and Lake Geneva, guarantees a fair amount of watering holes with magnificent views choose from, and equally stunning dishes to taste from. The peaceful region knows a long agricultural history, and local produce tops many of the best menus around. And although Geneva is still a classical French cuisine stronghold, there are more and more restaurants and cafés serving updated modern classics, sometimes even with a hipster twist …

Prepared according to artisanal recipes with organic ingredients, BE Choux works with produce that is either equitably sourced or local. Merging tradition with modernity, they’ve come up with truly original flavours, such as a filling that combines pistachio with olive oil.

The avocado toast trend has made its way to Geneva too. With hanging plants providing the greenery, wooden tables, metal chairs and naked lightbulbs suspended from the ceiling, this café is a hipster hang-out where you can get toasties as well as açai bowls, chia seed puddings as well as avocado toast – and ginger tea shots at the bar.

Located in an area of Geneva that has been a merchant’s centre since 1302, the Café du Centre was established in 1724 – one of the cities oldest brasseries –, near the Léman Lake, where fishermen used to rest on benches. Today, the restaurant is renowned for its fish and oysters, served with the fresh fruits and vegetables that also used to be traded here. Its vast terrace is a real draw on sunny days for locals and visitors alike.

Also located on the edges of Lac Leman is Le Floris, a ‘bistronomic’ restaurant and family business now in its 20th year. The menu is daring with an eye for attractive plating, something that didn’t escape the attention of Gault & Millau judges. Sit on the terrace that boasts 360° views on the lake, and take in these directional dishes based on local market produce.
