Bad Gastein

Austria

Located in the Hohe Tauern National Park in the heart of the Salzburgerland province, the Alpine town of Bad Gastein is a breathe of fresh air at an elevation of 1,000 meters. “Bad," or "spa" in German, hints at the area's importance as a health destination. Set among the Belle Époque buildings and ski trails are the legendary Heilstollen (healing tunnels) and thermal spring water trail, believed to contain unparalleled curative properties that scientist Marie Curie came to study; and royalty like German Emperor Wilhelm I and Iran's last king, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, came to enjoy. Composer Franz Schubert was so inspired by a summer stay here that he began sketching the Gmunden-Gastein Symphony. Today, Bad Gastein retains its legacy of luxurious health treatments but also hosts year-round adventure activities including skiing, snowboarding, hiking and cycling along the upper Gastein Valley.
